Mac's Notes from France 2014-10

Paris, France

If you find yourself in Paris and you would like an inexpensive lunch with a view, check out Les Galleries LaFayette Cafeteria (Haussmann) on the top floor.

les_galleries_lafayette_cafeteria

You can enjoy a lunch like this with a 1/2 litre of wine for about $30 CDN.

After lunch you can adjourn to the upper floor deck for a 350 degree view of the Paris skyline.

See you soon...

Paris, France

Back in Paris on the way home at a Left Bank Hotel that I have stayed at many times over the years.

charade_view

You may recognize the view from the hotel suite - the 1963 Audrey Hepburn - Cary Grant movie Charade was filmed here.

The wine on  the window ledge is a Sauvignon Touraine.

Will be returning to Ottawa on 12 November and will advise you soon on the Ed Hughes pickup information.

Florence, Italy

This is the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, Italy.

piazza_della_signoria

Florence is a much more manageable city than Rome and is situated next to Tuscany, one of the greatest wine regions of the world.

For anyone coming to Italy, this is a "must see" location for history, culture, food and wine.

The Nouvello 2014 has been available for a couple of weeks now.

Rome, Italy

Peluso Wine Shop, Rome!

No pictures of the Vatican or the Colosseum... after all, this is a wine web site.

Peluso is one of the oldest wine sites in Rome. Traditional long term relationships between the shop and producers make satisfied customers.

Nice, France

November is still beach time in Nice.

Just around the headlands (photo below) is the Port of Nice from where the ferries to Corsica arrive and depart. Corsica is a source of the cheaper wines on wine lists here... and it can be very good.

Notice that the ferry leaving port is riding higher in the water than the arriving boat. The latter boat has the heavier full cases of wine on board while the other is just returning the empties. Kind of like a floating Brewers Retail.

Marquis de Sade Fortress, Lacoste Provence, France

This is the first wine of 2014 produced in France.

1st_wine_2014

It is a Syrah from France's southern vineyards - crafted by carbonic maceration. No Beaujolais Nouveau rules to follow... this wine can be enjoyed right now at $5 CDN  a pop at the local wine shop.

The photograph was taken at the Marquis de Sade fortress in Lacoste Provence.

Menerbes, Luberon, France

This is, of course, Mac.... in Menerbes, FR... answering irate calls from customers waiting for their Niagara grapes and juices.

Only Mother Nature and Ed Hughes stand in the way of delivery.

See you in November!

Chateau La Canorgue. AOC Luberon, Bonnieux, France

Chateau la Canorgue is the location of the movie "A Good Year" scripted by Pete Mayle who has written extensively (e.g. "A Year in Provence") about this region.

ch_la_canorgue

I didn't see Russell Crowe but the wines were good, especially the red - a Grenache, Syrah and Carignane blend.

The harvest this year was spotty because of hail storms.

Les Dentelles de Montmirail, Provence, France

These limestone peaks oversee two of the famous vineyards of the southern Rhone.

les_dentailles_de_montmiral

Gigondas to the lower left on the mountains and Vacqueyras on the lower right owe their fame to Grenache Noir and a supporting cast of Syrah and Mourvèdre. This year the picking was completed by mid-October, while Niagara still waits. There is however some high altitude Syrah still hanging on the upper slopes of the mountains.

Locals say that the harvest here was plentiful and of good quality.
