Harvest 2010 News & Notes ...

2010 California Harvest Conditions

The grapes are “sugaring up” in California but about two weeks behind schedule.  The cool but very good growing season has slowed development... but the weather is now great and ripening is proceeding at a rational pace.

Later varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah in cooler areas may be pushing the limits of the grape shipping season.  You may wish to contact Mac MacDonald or Louis Giannetti toward the end of September to get an update.

Look for more balanced white grapes under these conditions and exceptional early reds.  If the weather holds, the late reds could potentially be great.

As in the past, especially for the fresh grapes, you may wish to consider alternatives to your first choice in case it is not available.

Fresh Grapes and Juices

TriBoro LUGANO Harvest 2009Again, this year, we are featuring  Albarino with origins in Northern Spain and Portugal; this grape displays good acidity and aromatics with excellent body while its thick skin stands up well during shipping.  As well, we will have the more traditional varieties from the  Lodi AVA -  Chardonnay, Viognier, and Pinot Grigio.

PrestonWine Team with Harvest 2008 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - L to R: Mac MacDonald, Sammy Souliere, Sam Giannetti, Richard Byron and Louis Giannetti

Our red grapes are also familiar to PrestonWine customers. These include your favourites from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to Pinot Noir and Zinfandel but also include, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Grenache and Tempranillo. As well, we are featuring Central Valley Touriga National and Cinsault.

Brehm Vineyards - Inventory Sale - Unbeatable Prices!!!

Peter Brehm at Chalk HillsWidely considered as the best grapes and juices available to the home wine maker, Peter Brehm has been in the business for over 30 years.  The prices we offer on his products are the best anywhere outside of California

This year we have a special offering of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2007 Vintage.  These pails were processed by Brehm Vineyards and have been frozen since harvest.  Due to a bankruptcy, these grapes have become available at this greatly reduced price of $125 per pail.  The Rancho Sarco Vineyard, from which these grapes are sourced, is located in the Coombsville region of Napa just down the hill from the Caldwell Vineyard

Peter’s own 2009 White Salmon Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are available at $99 and $125 respectively. These grapes are of excellent quality.  More information about them, including videos, can be found on the Brehm Vineyards website.

As we have said many times before, many years of freezing do not reduce quality of frozen must and juices.  If you are not convinced, come see us on Saturday, September 18, 2010 and we will change your mind.

Brehm Vineyards - Harvest 2010

The Brehm Vineyards website is worth exploring if you haven’t already.  These are the best grapes that the home winemaker can access, so you pay the same prices that the wineries do.... but the results are amazing.  These frozen musts and juices are recommended for experienced winemakers.

We have been fortunate to negotiate good opening prices for Brehm Vineyards Harvest 2010 frozen juices and musts and we are are taking orders for the usual early January 2010 delivery. There are many excellent choices of frozen musts and juices again this year and you can follow the progress of Harvest 2010 via Peter Brehm's web site with up-to-the-minute information on grape sugars, acids and prime factors at picking.

NOTE: This year, the Brehm Vineyards team are not picking in quantities that were previously the norm and many varietals types may not be available later as the season progresses. We have tried to ensure the varietals and quantities of musts and juices you, our PrestonWine.ca winemakers traditionally order BUT THIS YEAR, YOU SHOULD ORDER EARLY TO ENSURE YOUR REQUIREMENTS ARE MET!

Don't Miss la Vendemmia - 25 September 2010

Luigi Giannetti and Mac MacDonald will be conducting two workshops on Saturday, 25 September 2010, beginning at 11:00am and 2:00pm. These workshops are in conjunction with Ottawa's annual week-long Vendemmia Festival on Preston Street. The workshops will address a general look at winemaking as well as some history of home winemaking in Canada.  These events are free but participants must register through the Preston Street Events website

Other Grapes and Juices

At PrestonWine,  we pride ourselves in providing all price ranges for all budgets and we also provide consultations... so if you have any winemaking questions, please ask.  We encourage you to come down or phone to ask about other grapes and juices availability.

Remember to order your fresh grapes early as we cannot guarantee that all varieties will be available on time for shipping or that there will be sufficient interest in all varieties to justify a shipment.  If this is the case, we will endeavor to meet your needs through suggesting alternatives from our large roster of grapes and juices.

Thank you for your patronage and keep checking our site for evolving information on the Ottawa wine grape and juice scene.

In vino veritas,

Mac MacDonald, Louis Giannetti
and your PrestonWine Team
